Inflammation & Libido Suppression

In my previous post I discussed how the contraceptive pill can suppress libido. In this next article I want to run through another common, uncommon cause!

INFLAMMATION.

This applies to men too by the way!

Inflammation can drive oestrogen dominance (if you’ve read our articles you’ll know all about oestrogen dominance). Inflammation can tank your interest by increasing aromatase activity. Aromatase is the enzyme that converts testosterone into oestrogen.

The result is that:
Oestrogen goes up!
Testosterone goes down!
Libido out the window!

Or more than likely PMS will worsen. I don’t know too many women that feel sexy when they’re bloated, irritable, not sleeping and anxious. I know my wife certainly isn’t!

So what can you do?

One of the easier ways to test for inflammation is by looking at CRP (C-Reactive Protein). This will often be done with routine blood tests – especially ones that are looking at your iron.

In a non-inflamed individual, we want to see CRP less than 1, but most Dr’s are okay with CRP as high as 3. I’ve also seen many cases when the Doctor hasn’t been concerned with levels of 5 or higher though I’m sure they had their reasons.

We commonly see elevated CRP due to things like:

  • Autoimmune disease
  • Infection
  • Medications like the combined oral contraceptive pill
  • Poor adrenal function

IF inflammation is present, we don’t want to fix it just to fix libido. It’s a sign that something isn’t right, and most importantly we can do something about it.

Have you got any old blood test results at home? Take a look to see if you have a CRP measurement on there. This might be a chance to identify and target inflammation!
